Abstract
In this presentation I will describe how thin films of sputtered and
plated Fe, FePt, FePtCu and Ni strive to achieve a balance in stress
minimization and surface/interface energy when deposited on single
crystal substrates such as MgO, Cu and GaAs. In many cases the
deposition method seems to not matter as much as deposition temperature
and geometrical fit between the crystal structure of the film and the
substrate. I have explored sputter deposition as well as electroplating
and will describe x-ray diffraction pole-figure measurements of the
films and their interpretation, as well as calculations of their best
fit.
